The Laramie County Community College esports program put together a competitive and hard-fought showing this week in the NJCAAE Central Region Playoffs, with multiple Golden Eagles squads and players stepping onto the regional stage and proving they belong among the best.
In Fortnite: No Build, the duo of Austin Emmert and MacKenzie Leibouvitz faced a tough opening-round matchup against Hawkeye Community College. Despite strong effort and solid teamwork throughout the season, they fell 2–0, bringing their playoff run (and season) to a close. Their performance this year helped set the tone for LCCC's continued growth in the title.
Another Fortnite: No Build pairing, Victoria Kershaw and Adam Kirwin, delivered one of the most explosive performances of the week. The duo opened with a commanding 2–0 victory over Murray State College, showcasing elite coordination and aggressive playstyle. They followed that up with a tightly contested semifinal against Eastern Wyoming College, ultimately falling 2–1. Across the two matches, Kershaw and Kirwin combined for over 50 eliminations, highlighting their dominance in engagements. Their postseason journey is not over yet; they'll compete for third place this Monday at 5 PM, with a potential nationals berth still within reach.
The Rocket League squad—Austin Emmert, Pierse Demoney, Adam Kirwin, and David Cox—faced a challenging bracket in regional play. They dropped their first-round matchup to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) 0–3, then battled back in the second round against Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). Despite several close games and flashes of high-level play, the Eagles fell 1–3, ending their playoff run. The team showed resilience throughout and remained competitive against some of the region's strongest programs.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Malachi Larson demonstrated determination and adaptability. After falling in the opening round to SLCC, Larson regrouped and secured a victory over Mountain View College in the second round. His run came to an end in round three, where he pushed the #1-seeded Jefferson College to the limit in a narrow 2–3 loss. Larson's performance underscored his ability to compete at the highest level in the region.
The Mario Kart 8 field featured strong representation from LCCC, with Jesse Wardle, Gavin Thornock, AJ Price, and Mackenzie Leibouvitz all competing. Among them, Gavin Thornock emerged as a standout, advancing all the way to the semifinals. With that performance, Thornock has already secured his spot in the National Tournament and now has his sights set on a Central Region title. He will face IWCC next Thursday at 5 PM with a chance to claim the regional crown.
While several Golden Eagles saw their playoff journeys come to a close, the week was defined by resilience, high-level play, and continued progress for the program. With multiple athletes still competing for podium finishes and national recognition, LCCC Esports continues to build on its reputation as a powerhouse within the NJCAAE.
Fans can continue to support the remaining competitors this week by watching on YouTube or competing to watching in the Merrell Student Lounge as the Golden Eagles push toward nationals and add to an already impressive legacy.
