Laramie County Community College (LCCC) Women's Soccer delivered a commanding performance on Saturday afternoon, defeating Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) 7-0 in a match that showcased relentless pressure, clinical finishing, and defensive discipline.
The Golden Eagles wasted no time asserting their high-press strategy, which paid off just three minutes into the match. A misplayed pass from the WNCC goalkeeper was intercepted by Madison Moore and quickly fed to Emily Sheather, whose shot inside the 18-yard box was parried away. Avery Anderson was perfectly positioned to finish the rebound with a one-touch strike, giving LCCC an early 1-0 lead.
Despite the early setback, WNCC stuck to their game plan, collapsing the midfield and intercepting passes to frustrate LCCC's attack. Their defensive resilience held until the 36th minute, when Jentrie Porter intercepted a pass and delivered a diagonal ball to Sheather. Sheather calmly collected and beat the keeper to double the lead.
LCCC began to find rhythm late in the first half, and in the 43rd minute, Sheather played a through ball to Anderson, who was fouled in the box by a recovering defender. Ekena Little stepped up and converted the penalty kick, sending the Golden Eagles into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.
The second half began with LCCC firing on all cylinders. Just a minute in, Haley Pierson won the ball in the middle third and threaded a pass to Sheather, who made no mistake in a 1v1 situation with the WNCC keeper, extending the lead to 4-0.
LCCC's relentless pressure continued to suffocate WNCC's attempts to build out of the back. In the 71st minute, Evelyn Anderson's long-range free kick caused chaos in the box, and Emma Cortez was tripped by a WNCC defender, earning another penalty. Victoria Espinoza converted from the spot to make it 5-0.
Five minutes later, Porter pressed a WNCC center back, won the ball in the final third, and coolly finished past the keeper for LCCC's sixth goal. The final blow came in the 83rd minute when Melanie Moreno chipped a ball over the backline to Jocelyn Trejo, who calmly slotted home the seventh and final goal.
LCCC outshot WNCC 20-2, with 15 shots on target. The Golden Eagles' defense was rock-solid, allowing only a few chances on frame and maintaining a clean sheet.
"I'm proud of the team's energy and discipline today, especially in the second half," said LCCC Head Coach Lugo Arenas. "We've been working on pressing with purpose and staying composed in the final third, and today it all came together."
With this win, LCCC continues to build momentum heading into a tough finish to Region IX play. Their next match will be a key test as they look to maintain their form against Northwest College next Friday.
