CHEYENNE, WY - The Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles (10-12, 2-3) fought off the Eastern Wyoming Lancers (8-9, 3-3) 3-2 on Friday night.
After trading points early in the first set, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 10-5 lead after a Michela De Stefano (Rome, Italy) ace. Kalme Moncavo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) strung a pair of points together, recording a kill followed by a block, helping the Golden Eagles extend the lead to 19-10. LCCC finished off the Lancers in the first set, 25-16.
Moncavo finished the match with 13 kills, second most on the team, and a team-best five blocks while De Stefano posted six kills and 12 digs, a team-high.
Eastern Wyoming jumped out quickly in the second set, opening up a 14-10 lead before the Golden Eagles were forced to take their first timeout of the match. LCCC closed the gap, climbing to within three at 20-17 before the Lancers closed out the set with five straight points, winning the set 25-17.
LCCC raced out to a 9-5 lead in the third set before Eastern Wyoming rattled off three consecutive points, a run stopped by a Shelby Veenstra (Twin Falls, Idaho) kill, pushing the lead back to two at 10-8. The Golden Eagles went on to take a 19-14 lead after a run that included a pair of De Stefano kills. Rigan McInerney (Gillette, Wyo.) ended the set with a kill, giving the Golden Eagles a 2-1 match lead after the 25-17 win the third set.
After the Golden Eagles stormed out to a 17-12 lead before the Lancers scored 13 of the next 16 points to win the set 25-20. Eastern Wyoming continued the momentum into the fifth set, taking a 7-5 lead before the Golden Eagles scored the next five points, capped off by a Shae Halls (Carpenter, Wyo.) ace to push the Golden Eagles' lead to 10-7, forcing an Eastern Wyoming timeout. The Golden Eagles continued the strong play in the fifth, winning the set 15-11.
Freshman Kiley Still (Cheyenne, Wyo.) recorded a career-high 27 assists in the win. McInerney led the team with 17 kills while Veenstra finished the night with 17 assists and 10 digs. As a team, the Golden Eagles recorded nine blocks and also tallied 10 aces, led by both McInerney and Halls who each had three.
Friday's match was LCCC volleyball and Rotary of Club of Cheyenne's annual Spike Polio Night, raising $657 to help in the fight to eradicate polio.
The Golden Eagles hit the road next weekend for a pair of Region IX games, beginning Friday against Northwest in Powell at 7:00 pm.
