CHEYENNE, WY - The Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles (11-14, 3-5) defeated the Western Wyoming Mustangs (6-19) 3-1 on Friday evening.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first set. Kalme Moncavo (Rio De Janiero, Brazil) gave the Golden Eagles an 11 point lead in the set with a block before Michela De Stefano (Rome, Italy) pushed the lead to 22-10 with a kill. The Golden Eagles went on to win the set 25-10 on a Shae Halls (Carpenter, Wyo.) ace.
De Stefano led the Golden Eagles with 22 kills and 19 digs, which tied her career-high. Moncavo finished the sophomore night with a team-leading five blocks.
Western Wyoming opened up the second set by scoring six of the first eight points before the Golden Eagles were forced to take a timeout. The Golden Eagles fell behind 19-12 before scoring the next seven points to tie the set at 19. Western Wyoming would close out the set, winning 25-23.
Rigan McInerney (Gillette, Wyo.) recorded another double-double, finishing the match with 19 kills and 14 digs while Shelby Veenstra (Twin Falls, Idaho) had 26 assists, three aces and two blocks.
The Mustangs got off to another quick start in the third set before the Golden Eagles were able to rally, pulling out the set 25-23 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Golden Eagles fell behind 5-0 in the fourth set before taking a timeout and eventually cutting the deficit to one at 6-5. After another run by the Mustangs, the Golden Eagles were able to battle back, running away from the Mustangs in the fourth set, 25-19 to win the match 3-1.
Freshman Kiley Still (Cheyenne, Wyo.) ended the night with 21 assists, seven digs, and two aces while McKenzie Earl (Rawlins, Wyo.) had three kills and three blocks.
The Golden Eagles host Casper tomorrow at 3:00 pm in their final home match of the season.
