The Golden Eagles Volleyball team kicked off their 2025 season with a competitive showing at the NMMI Classic in Roswell, New Mexico, finishing the weekend with a 2-2 record across four hard-fought matches.
The weekend opened with a thrilling five-set battle against host New Mexico Military Institute. Despite falling short, the Golden Eagles showcased resilience and firepower. Sophomore outside hitter Lea Susoy led the charge with 16 kills, 7 digs, and 2 service aces.
In Friday's second match, the Golden Eagles faced Amarillo College in another five-set nail-biter. Susoy continued her strong performance with 13 kills, while Beatrice Nani added 11 kills. Libero Savannah Cummings anchored the defense with a team-high 26 digs.
Saturday brought the team's first win of the season against Jefferson College in four sets. Susoy again led the attack with 17 kills, and Ella Lopez followed close behind with 13 kills and 2 aces. Sophomore setter Addison Schreurs orchestrated the offense with an impressive 43 assists.
In the final match of the weekend, the Golden Eagles overcame adversity and a campus-wide power outage during the fourth set to defeat Hill College in four sets. The team rallied with determination to secure their second win and close out the tournament on a high note.
The Golden Eagles now turn their focus to their home opener this Thursday at 7 PM, where they will face Ranger College in the first match of their home tournament.
