The Laramie County Community College women's basketball team closed its postseason run Thursday evening, competing with grit and determination in a Region IX Quarterfinal matchup against Gillette College. Despite a strong third-quarter push, the Golden Eagles fell 79–63 at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs.
LCCC entered the quarterfinal with confidence and energy, setting the tone early with disciplined defense and balanced scoring. The Golden Eagles trailed just 26–24 at halftime after holding Gillette to one three-pointer in the first two quarters, forcing the Pronghorns to earn points primarily at the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles delivered their strongest stretch coming out of the locker room, scoring 20 points in the third quarter, their highest-scoring period of the game. Sophomore Sabela Carro led the charge, finishing with a team-high 16 points while attacking the paint and knocking down timely perimeter shots. Glorielle Mukeba anchored the interior with a dominant presence on the glass, recording 13 rebounds to go along with nine points, consistently creating second-chance opportunities for LCCC.
Off the bench, Jessica Taylor provided an important spark, scoring 12 points in just 14 minutes, including two three-pointers that helped LCCC stay within striking distance midway through the second half. Nuria Florensa contributed across the board with eight points and two assists, while Irelynd Barnes added steady ball movement and five assists at the guard position.
LCCC's defensive effort remained consistent throughout the night, forcing Gillette into contested looks and limiting their outside shooting to 1-for-10 from three-point range. The Golden Eagles also won key rebounding battles early, finishing with 39 total rebounds, including 18 offensive boards, underscoring their physicality and effort in the paint.
Gillette ultimately pulled away late behind strong free-throw shooting and transition scoring, but LCCC continued to compete until the final buzzer, never backing down from the challenge of postseason play.
Head coach Danielle Rinaldo praised her team's fight and growth following the quarterfinal matchup.
"I'm incredibly proud of the way this group competed for 40 minutes," Rinaldo said. "We showed toughness, we stayed together, and we didn't shy away from the moment. This team took meaningful steps forward this season, and this game is a reflection of how much they've grown and how close we are to where we want to be."
The Region IX Tournament appearance caps a season marked by growth, resilience, and steady improvement for the Golden Eagles. With a roster featuring a blend of returning contributors and developing talent, LCCC demonstrated its ability to compete at a high level within one of the nation's toughest junior college regions.
