LCCC Squanders 18‑Point Lead in 85–84 Loss at Trinidad State

Laramie County Community College appeared to be on its way to a decisive road victory Friday night, building an 18‑point second‑half lead behind a dominant offensive stretch. But a late surge by Trinidad State College erased the Golden Eagles' advantage, handing LCCC a painful 85–84 loss in Region IX action.

The defeat overshadowed what was, for much of the evening, one of LCCC's most complete performances of the season.

Eagles Take Control After Halftime

Trailing 38–35 at halftime, the Golden Eagles exploded out of the locker room with a burst of defensive intensity and efficient scoring. Sophomore guard TJ Coulter led the charge, finishing with 25 points, attacking the paint and hitting timely mid‑range shots.

Forward Isaac Fiagbe added 15 points on 7‑of‑11 shooting, consistently finishing around the rim, while Kordell Philemon and Anthony Nettles brought crucial energy off the bench.

With their defense generating turnovers — LCCC forced 14 on the night — the Eagles raced out in transition and strung together a decisive run that pushed their lead to 18 points midway through the second half. The pace, pressure, and physicality swung fully in LCCC's favor as they appeared poised to seize control of the contest.

Trinidad State's Bench Leads the Comeback

Momentum shifted sharply in the final 10 minutes. Trinidad State's bench, which accounted for 43 points, ignited a rally that chipped away at the Eagles' lead possession by possession.

Reserve forward Nnamdi Ubawike scored 13 points on 6‑of‑8 shooting, finding gaps inside the defense. Meanwhile, Donovan Weese delivered two momentum‑swinging three‑pointers as part of an 8‑point, perfect shooting performance.

In total, the Trojans drained 11 three‑pointers, shooting 45.8% from beyond the arc, and used a 45–32 rebounding edge to generate second‑chance opportunities that kept them within striking distance.

A series of empty LCCC possessions combined with Trinidad State's timely scoring allowed the Trojans to erase the once‑comfortable gap and eventually take the lead in the closing minutes.

Final Possession Comes Up Just Short

Despite the collapsing lead, LCCC fought back. Coulter converted a clutch layup, and Philemon turned a steal into a transition finish to bring the Eagles within one at 85–84.

After securing a defensive stop in the final seconds, LCCC had the ball with an opportunity to win. The Eagles executed their set, attacking the paint, but Trinidad State's interior defense contested the attempt, and the potential game‑winner rolled off the rim as time expired.

A Missed Opportunity

For the Golden Eagles, the loss represents both a step forward and a painful lesson. They demonstrated an ability to create and sustain momentum, play with pace, and overwhelm an opponent on the road — but also the importance of closing out games, securing rebounds, and responding to late pressure.

LCCC will look to regroup quickly as they continue Region IX play.
